Liability Insurance has two layers: BI/PD, which is insurance shorthand for Bodily Injury and Property Damage. Both are for if your vehicle injures someone else or damages someone else's property. General liability auto insurance an extremely important coverage to have in your auto policy. It protects you if you've been found at fault for an accident, so be sure to read any and all liability coverage plans closely to confirm that you have this!
Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist (UM/UIM) coverage is straightforward. If you’re in a collision with a motorist who has no insurance or their insurance is lacking, UM/UIM has your back. It's important to note that this insurance is different from liability! UM/UIM provides you assistance when you’re not at fault, while liability provides other people assistance in situations where you are at fault.
Personal Injury Protection (PIP) is like a warm apple pie on a chilly day; a comfort that makes things a little easier. PIP won’t prevent you from being injured in an accident, but it does help cover medical costs associated with a collision. Part of PIP includes medical coverage, which helps lift the financial burden of treating your injuries, rehabilitation, and in some cases, lost wages and funeral costs.
Collision is for damages your car had an active role in. For example: banging your door into a streetlamp that you thought you parked further away from or backing over a shopping cart you forgot to return to the cart corral. These are likely covered under collision. Sadly, there’s no coverage for the embarrassment that may come with instances like these, but at least you have peace of mind knowing that your vehicle can be repaired.
Comprehensive is for when your car receives damages that are out of your control and you did not have a role in. This is above basic auto insurance. Some examples would be things like theft, vandalism, fire, animals, etc. Comprehensive coverage is what you get if you want acts of nature to be covered. This includes events such as flooding, hail, wildfires, and other natural disasters.
