Dwelling Coverage is the bare basis of home insurance coverage. It's for the home itself, covering things like floors, foundations, the roof, and any permanent fixtures attached to the house; porches and garages. It also covers things built in to the home. Ex: countertops, water heaters, and HVACs. Dwelling coverage does not cover things like the contents inside, the land it sits on, or detached structures!
Other Structures Coverage, also known as Coverage B, is to protect things on the property that are not attached to the home. Fences, detached garages, driveways and gazebos all fall under this category. This coverage helps to repair/rebuild/replace things like these. It's not legally required to have other structures coverage. However, homeowners insurance (almost always required by mortgage lenders) oftentimes include it!
Personal Property coverage, often included in most polices, is what protects your personal belongings in the event of theft, damage, or destruction. It can help replace things like electronics, furniture, and jewelry if they're damaged or lost in a covered event. Think: theft, fire/smoke, water damage, etc. Actual Cash Value (ACV) and Replacement Cost Value (RCV) are both types of personal property coverage, having different limits and requirements. An agent can help you pick the best one for you!
Personal Liability makes sure you're covered financially in the event that someone is injured while on your property. If someone slips on the ice-covered sidewalk or a rowdy party guest falls off the deck. Personal Liability protects you as the homeowner/renter. It also includes someone else's property getting damaged. For example, a tree falling and hitting a neighbors fence. Though not legally required in most states, it is usually required by mortgage lenders/landlords. It's also highly recommended for properties with risks such as dogs, pools, trampolines, and playsets.
Loss of Use Coverage, is also known as Coverage D or additional living expenses (ALE). This coverage is a standard part of most home insurance, regardless of the type (homeowners policy, renters, etc). Loss of Use is there to help cover any expenses that go above your usual in an instance where you're unable to live in your home because of a covered loss. This helps pay for things like hotels, storage units, pet boarding, etc.
